Localeur friends and family,
I am amazed everyday by the outpouring of support we're seeing across the country, from people in cities we've already launched to people in cities who are (im)patiently awaiting Localeur's arrival!
That said, I wanted to share a quick word on our growth, particularly since many of us (yes, myself included) are experiencing app crashes that have hindered some of the Localeur experience in the early goings with our app since it was launched early this year. We still have a solid App Store rating (4.5 stars), which I'm thankful for, but don't think that we don't hear you all loud and clear. Yes, we are working to address the crashing issues. If we could do what Twitter used to do and create a 'Fail Whale' we'd have done that by now.
So while we are proud to have been named the Best New Startup in Austin last year by Austin Monthly, while also getting kudos from the likes of the Los Angeles Times and South by Southwest, among others, we also know that we're in a marathon not a sprint and we've still got a long way to go. Companies in our industry - namely TripAdvisor and Yelp - have 15 and 10 years of experience building their communities and products with hundreds if not thousands of full-time employees to fulfill their missions. Giving the world something better is going to take a little time, and a few more resources than Chase and I, which we acknowledge.
Here at Localeur, we're plugging away without a single full-time developer or community manager, which are the very personnel resources our competitors needed just to give a product to the world. That said, we will continue to do our best to address issues we know many of you are experiencing with regard to app crashes to make your product experience (and trips!) better.
Fittingly, I just had coffee this morning with a friend who said, "I'm sure it's better that you didn't raise $2 million at the beginning and waste a lot of it (figuring out what works) to get here rather than raising $2 million today and knowing exactly what to do with it now..."
True. So now Chase and I know exactly what we plan to do and how to do it without all the baggage of having fucked up with some VC's millions and having fooled our passionate users into thinking we thought we had it all perfected and saved the world.
To wrap this up for all of us, please know that we hear you (both when the app is working and when it's not), we see you all using the #experiencelocal hashtag, and we are more excited and energized than ever to give you the best product and service possible to help you experience the cities the right way whether it's the one you live in or the one you're visiting. Stay tuned.
Joah aka Chief Localeur
